Statement

Profound, but not confusing; invoking emotion but not underestimating the Viewer’s intelligence; exploring all possibilities but never straying too far from certainty (or creating new certainties).  Re-assembling reality in my paintings seems to work.  There`s overlap between subject and background, between form and space.  I’ve been playing with these relationships using defined geometric shapes and overly intense colors.

Most recently, my work has been dark, aggressive, and features lots of personal symbolism.  In short, it`s been about death.  This is a very mysterious, sad and confusing topic for me and I find myself drawn to exploring it.  I have also been producing work that shows my interest in the role of women in society and politics.  I was very intrigued by this last presidential election and the role women played in it.  My work tends to have underlying feministic tones and some of it really focuses on hot-bed political issues.  I have always been interested in the human body and the various forms it takes during one`s life.  As a result, pregnancy, surgery and scars also tend to be themes.  Lastly, I`m very intrigued by the concept of time and how much of it we spend doing menial things.

My style has evolved from study at the Art Institute of Chicago, Le Faculte de Lettres, and Indiana University; however, the most crucial experience in my creative explorations was the year and a half that I lived in France.  I was living in a state of hyper realism and my paintings blossomed.  They began to exist in their own universe which became as interesting to figure out as the one I was experiencing in France.  I have grown from a strictly observational based educational background to a more non-observational approach to form, color and brush technique.
